In the quiet village of Shire, the hobbit Bilbo Baggins plans to celebrate his 111th birthday widely. He invites all his numerous relatives to the celebration, but suddenly disappears in the midst of the fun. The Ring of Power, which Bilbo found in a cave many years ago, helped him to become invisible. The magician Gandalf, an old friend of Bilbo, realizes what kind of ring it is, and asks Bilbo's nephew, Frodo, to take the Ring to Rivendell to give it to the elven lord Elrond. His friends Sam, Merry and Pippin set off with Frodo.
