In 2035, a deadly virus has destroyed five billion people, almost the majority of the population of our planet. Those who survived are now forced to live underground. Prisoner James Cole is sent to the surface to collect specimens and samples, and after a while decide to send him back in time to 1996, when he started this terrible epidemic. But Cole is mistakenly falls in 1990, where it is taken for a madman and placed in a psychiatric hospital, where he watches a young specialist Kathryn Railly. Cole pushed back to 2035 and give him another chance to rectify the situation, sending it back to 1996. There is another bug, and Cole gets in the trenches during the First world war.
