Alexander Hartdegen is a young scientist living in New York in the late 19th century. He teaches theoretical mechanics at Columbia University. His colleagues often criticize Alexander for his radical theories. One day the scientist invites his beloved Emma on a date where he is going to propose to her. But as a result of an accident Emma dies in Alexander's arms. The yearning scientist spends four years in his laboratory and manages to create a time machine, with the help of which he is going to go to the past and save Emma. But the inconsolable Alexander becomes convinced that every time he tries to save his beloved, she ends up dying under different circumstances anyway...
