George Bailey, a resident of a small town, is so upset by the countless problems and debt to the local banker that he is considering suicide on Christmas Eve. He always wanted to leave his hometown to see the world, but circumstances and his own kind heart prevented him from leaving Bedford Falls. And so George prepares to jump off the bridge, but instead saves his guardian angel, Clarence Odbody, who came to get his wings. Angel decides to show George what life would be like in his native places if he had never been born.
