Pete Mitchell (Maverick) is a test pilot who is testing a new sixth-generation fighter jet capable of hypersonic speeds in excess of mach 10.
But this project is being tried to shut down because some admirals believe that fighter jets are a relic of the past, and the future will be in drones that follow orders without question, unlike the soldier and Pete Mitchell, who disobeyed an admiral's order to land a fighter jet, resulting in the destruction of a multi-million dollar prototype and a "successful" speed test.
Saving the protagonist from possible dismissal is real combat experience, fighter piloting skills and ex-Pacific Fleet Admiral Tom Kazansky (Iceman), who was his fellow officer.
Iceman recommended Pete Mitchell to supervise and train pilots for a specific military operation to destroy an underground plant that enriches uranium.
