USA, 1969. Billy Covington (Robert Downey, Jr.) is a helicopter pilot at a radio station in Los Angeles. His license is suspended for violating several safety rules at once, and finding a new position won't be easy. But his piloting skills, bravery and some disregard for the law arouse the interest of a government agent who offers him a position with Air America Cargo Airlines. The stranger assures him that the job in Laos exclusively civilian, for there is no war there, but Billy must keep his new job in secret. Unable to find another job with his inactive license, Billy agrees.
